McKinley Park Campground
Lake Vermillion
Soudan, MN
What a fun trip this was! Lake Vermillion has been a favorite of ours for many, many years. Early in our marriage we would rent a cabin for a week and come up here to go fishing each summer. It’s been a while since we’ve been here, so it was great to be back on this beautiful lake.
We started our trip with a somber moment. On Friday, on the way to the campground, we stopped at the Wellstone Memorial just outside of Eveleth. Both of us had met Paul during our political years and had great respect and admiration for him. The memorial site is beautiful with its circular walkway and stone monuments. While beautifully done, it’s also a very somber place to be. Walking the circle you read about Paul and Shelia’s life and have a chance to reflect on all that they accomplished. We left this place of reflection with tears in our eyes.
Our campsite wasn’t too bad. We were right at the entrance to the park, but not to much traffic. We got the camper parked and setup without any problems. Didn’t have much of a view of the lake, but that was ok, as we were planning on a lot of lake time on Saturday.
Spent Saturday on the lake with some co-workers of Tom’s. Had a great time cruising around the lake and doing a little fishing. The weather was just perfect. After cruising the lake we met over at Cathy’s cabin and grilled burgers and enjoyed the night.
Cathy has a great cabin just off the lake. It’s a two story cabin with pine interior that makes it warm, welcoming and comfy. We really enjoyed our time there.

Mike and I also stopped at the Wellstone Memorial this summer when we were driving from the North Shore to Park Rapids. The memorial is very well done, and, of course, we got angry all over again about the state of affairs the world is in. We noticed that some people had trekked out the 1/2 mile to the actual crash site from the walkway, but we felt we would get stuck in a peat bog so didn't want to risk it. Did you two hike out there?
We took the trail that supposedly went to the crash site but it seemed to end in a clearing so that's all the farther we went. At most, it was 300 feet from the memorial site. Maybe next year we'll hike it.
