McCarthy Beach State Park, Hibbing, MN - Trip 12

State park maps are not all that they appear to be. While we do have a lake view from this campsite, we’re also right on top of our neighbors (on all sides) with little or no trees between us. We might was well have one big group campsite. Not what we like, but we’ll make due.

The park is on a very popular, and populated, lake. There was a powerboat shooting a 30 foot rooster tail driving back and forth on the lake last night along with several other loud and fast boats. Again, not what we’d like, but live and learn. Bear Head still remains number one on our list and we will most likely make a few trips there next year.

The campsite is very tight. We were able to back the camper in OK but cannot put the awning out due to a couple of small trees on that side. Plenty of room for the slide outs, though.

We were going to do what is becoming our usual routine, and that is getting out of town on Friday night and stopping overnight at Grand Casino RV Park in Hinckley. Unfortunately they were full for the weekend. Unbelievable as they have a lot of campsites and who would have thought that it would be such a popular spot. So we left on Saturday morning and had nice, leisurely drive up. Stopped for lunch along the way and stopped for groceries in Hibbing.

Sunday Morning
A noisy start but a quiet end. The neighbors with three kids just packed-up and pulled-out. Sure is a lot quieter now. We took a drive and hiked the "Lost Forty" forest. It's a section of land that was mistakenly surveyed as swampland back in the 1800's and never logged. It's full of trees that are 300+ years old. It was very cool.

Monday
Cloudy, rainy and a thunderstorm today. However, Mike did find time in the afternoon to install the Thule rack system for the kayaks. It’s sweet!!

Tuesday
The trip has gone by way, way to fast. It's now time to pack-up and head home. Until next time...
