Yeah! First campfire of the season. We had to huddle around it to stay warm, but it was a great way to end the day.
We spent the day driving around the Ely area checking out land and scoping out the lakes. We ended-up at the Grand Ely Lodge for a late brunch. From there it was back to camp for a nice nap. Dinner was brats on the grille followed by the aforementioned campfire.
So, despite the cold, the snow and the wet weather, the trip was a complete success!
Next trip is the big one, one week in Canada.

What's wrong with this picture?!! Yes, those are our sandals with snow on them!

Yes, that's SNOW!!
What happened to all that talk about global warming??
Went to bed last night with the "plop-plop" sound of snow falling off the trees onto the camper. Awoke this morning to a slight covering of snow. Not as bad as two weeks ago at Sakatah.
It certainly hasn't deterred any of the fishermen. The parking lot is still full this AM. We're wondering if they aren't camping out in the area as lots of the trucks still have snow on them.
Discovered this morning that the path that leads away from our campsite goes right to the lake AND there is another picnic table and fire ring down there. Very nice! The best part is, when we come back here, we'll be able to carry the kayaks from our campsite right to the lake! That puts this campground in the #2 spot of places to return to.
Today we're going to explore Bear Island Lake which is just east of Bear Head State Park. Tom found some land for sale there and we're going to check it out - along with a stop in Ely for some shopping.

Arrived at the campground around 4:30 PM today. A little later than planned, but the weather is cold so we were in no hurry.
We're at Fall Lake Campground, a national park in the Superior National Forest. Fall Lake is part of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area so the setting is fantastic. The ice just went out on the lake so the parking lot was filled with boat trailers when we arrived. Heard about one guy who came in today with an 8 pound AND a 15 pound walleye. We may have to rent a canoe and try our luck tomorrow, if the weather allows. Right now it's cold and raining with the Duluth weather forecast saying more of the same tomorrow.
As you can tell, we have internet access via Mike's cell phone. Not super fast, but good enough to blog with. We'll take some pictures tomorrow and try to post them. Hopefully the connection will be able to handle it.
