Wm O'Brien State Park - Trip 4

Our first full weekend camping trip! We both took Friday off and we were on the road around 1 PM. We arrived at the park for an early check-in, bought some firewood and headed out to find our spot.

Our campsite was in the lower campground by the river with a path from our site to the river. Mike parked the rig on the first (and a half) try. Considering how narrow the road was, he did pretty good.

After setting up camp, we went for a hike. There was a nice trail that went beside the river, over to Lake Alice, back towards the campground and then back down along the river. The weather was perfect. Sunny, warm and a light breeze.

Dinner was burgers on the grill followed by some down time just sitting outside and watching the world go by. What a great way to recharge the batteries.

Saturday we headed into Stillwater for lunch and some shopping (that’s after sleeping in until 10 AM!) Tom found a good deal on a cast iron skillet for the camper. Seems he has some plans that involve Mike cooking bacon and eggs over a wood fire some time in the near future.

Saturday evening our friend Jan drove up from Stillwater for dinner. She surprised us by bringing some King Crab legs for an appetizer. We put them on the grill and they were fantastic! While we were eating dinner a wood duck decided it was time for her to get some dinner also. She’s nesting in a tree right next to the picnic table. We had no idea until she crawled out of the tree and flew away in a rush. It was wonderful! She returned about an hour later. We heard a couple of wing flaps and she was on the tree and then in the tree so fast we didn’t even have a chance to reach for the camera. We finished the evening with a roaring campfire, talking and watching the stars come out.

On Sunday, yup, you guessed it, we slept in until 9:30 and then started the day. A little breakfast, showers and then pack up and go home. Traffic was surprisingly light considering it was opening fishing and we made it home without any problems.

We’re home next weekend as Mike has dive training. Weekend after it’s up to Cass Lake for 4 days of camping and fishing.

Until then!
